Replace Grammarly Premium with OpenAI ChatGPT

How to use OpenAI’s ChatGPT to replace Grammarly Premium

I love Grammarly! It improved my writing exponentially by correcting my spelling, grammar, and punctuation mistakes as I type and suggesting recommendations. I want to upgrade to Grammarly Premium to unlock more features, but I cannot see myself paying $30 per month for the service.

So, I have decided to check if I can use OpenAI ChatGPT to get the same features as offered by Grammarly Premium. Please note that I have never upgraded my Grammarly Free account to Grammarly Premium. This article was written based on my research, not actual experiences with Grammarly Premium.

I have divided this article into the following sections:

  • Grammar
  • Report
  • Readability
  • Tone
  • Intent
  • Audience
  • Style
  • Emotion
  • Domain
  • Plagiarism and Citations

Original Text

I wrote the following paragraph a few years back. I will be using the following paragraph as a before paragraph to check out OpenAI ChatGPT:

It took more than 19 years for Apple to release a major new version of macOS. Last time Apple released a major version of macOS was all the way back in March 2001 when they released macOS X 10. This is really big deal. Developing a good software without major bugs (I like to say unexpected features) is really hard, but developing a good software with more than million lines of code that requires 100s or 1000s of developers without major bugs is impossible where everyday feels like gladiatorial pit of warring teams where only the fittest survive.

Grammar

Prompt: Can you check the following paragraph, which is enclosed by a double quote for grammar mistakes, and provide a revised paragraph — “It took more than 19 years for Apple to release a major new version of macOS. Last time Apple released a major version of macOS was all the way back in March 2001 when they released macOS X 10. This is really big deal. Developing a good software without major bugs (I like to say unexpected features) is really hard, but developing a good software with more than million lines of code that requires 100s or 1000s of developers without major bugs is impossible where everyday feels like gladiatorial pit of warring teams where only the fittest survive.”

ChatGPT:

“It took Apple more than 19 years to release a major new version of macOS. The last time Apple released a major version of macOS was in March 2001 when they released macOS X 10. This is a really big deal. Developing good software without major bugs (I like to call them unexpected features) is already challenging, but developing good software with over a million lines of code that requires hundreds or thousands of developers without major bugs is nearly impossible. It’s like a gladiatorial pit of warring teams where only the fittest survive on a daily basis.”

Prompt: Can you explain what grammar mistakes you have corrected, including an explanation of the rule in question?

ChatGPT:

  • I corrected the verb tense of “took” from past tense to present tense, as the sentence is discussing a current event (Apple’s release of a new version of macOS).
  • I added the article “a” before “major new version” for clarity and grammatical correctness.
  • I corrected the verb tense of “was” to past tense to match the verb tense of “released” in the same clause.
  • I changed “developing a good software” to “developing good software” for subject-verb agreement. “Software” is singular, so the verb should also be singular.
  • I added the article “the” before “last time” for clarity.
  • I added “over” before “a million” for clarity and grammatical correctness.
  • I corrected the verb tense of “requires” to present tense to match the verb tense of “is” in the same clause.
  • I changed “where” to “it’s like” for better sentence structure and clarity.
  • I added the article “a” before “gladiatorial pit” for grammatical

Plagiarism and Citations

Prompt: Can you check the paragraph for plagiarism?

ChatGPT:

I apologize, but I am not able to check for plagiarism as it goes beyond my capabilities as a language AI model. Checking for plagiarism requires access to a database of texts to compare against and the ability to analyze the similarities and differences between texts.

Prompt: Can you help with the citation for the paragraph?

ChatGPT:

It is not possible to provide a citation for the given paragraph as it is not sourced from any specific publication or source. In order to properly cite the information, a source must be identified and the appropriate citation style followed.

With the exception of plagiarism and citations (which makes sense because ChatGPT does not have access to the Internet), you can use ChatGPT to replace Grammarly Premium. If ChatGPT remains free for use in the foreseeable future, this will be very disruptive to Grammarly.
